Bacteria-Fighting Herbs

Monday, November 03, 2008

Herbs like oregano and cinnamon could help fend off E. coli infection, according to ongoing studies. In tests on bacteria-killing herbal compounds, scientists are trying to determine whether a film infused with an herbal compound might guard ready-to-eat bags of greens against the threat of the bacterium. Other herbs - such as Oregon grape root and goldenseal - have been found to fight off E. Coli and other pathogens. “These herbs contain a compound called berberine, which helps stimulate the intestinal walls to secrete fluids full of antibodies, says medical herbalist Paul Bergner. To protect yourself from infection while traveling - or during an outbreak of produce-contaminating pathogens - Bergner advises taking half a dropper of Oregon grape root or goldenseal tincture three times daily.
